Description

Wulfenite and Mimetite

San Francisco Mine, Cerro Prieto, Cucurpe, Sonora, Mexico

3 by 1¾ by 1¼ inches (7.6 x 4.4 x 3.2 cm). Custom lucite base.

This specimen features dozens of deep orange mimetite balls perched around and included within the water-clear, very glassy, yellow wulfenite window panes.

Usually found as thin, flat crystals with a bright red to orange to yellow hue, wulfenite is a lead molybdate mineral that crystallizes in the tetragonal system.

Mimetite is a secondary mineral, formed by the oxidation of lead minerals, usually in arsenic-bearing lead deposits. The specimen offered here displays mimetite's characteristic amber hues and hexagonal crystals.
