The present work depicts the shores of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Avery became a staple among the artist’s community in Gloucester where he summered with his family, sharing inspiration with other local artists including Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb. The sea always held a particular place of importance for Milton Avery and was depicted in paintings he produced throughout his career. The present work, executed in 1945, represents a more abstract interpretation of the seascape motif.
