Acquired from the above circa late 1960s-70s by the present owner

The present work depicts the artist’s beloved wife Sally Michel Avery at their home in the Catskill Mountains. Sally served as the artist’s most important subject and muse. Unlike many of Avery’s later works, executed with simplified compositions and tonal palettes, Garden Reader emphasizes the exterior garden setting with exaggerated patterns and coloring in the background. Rendering his subject through a two-dimensional design, Avery’s abstract interpretations captured the forms and figures of the world around him.
