Le grand cirque, rideau de scène
signed Bernard Buffet and dated 68 (centre right)
brush and ink, gouache, coloured crayon and pencil on paper
50.4 by 72.4cm., 19⅞ by 28½in.
Framed: 63 by 85cm., 24¾ by 33½in.
Executed in 1968.
The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Maurice Garnier.
Executed on cream wove paper and not laid down. There are a number of artist's pin holes to each of the four corners and one to the centre of each edge, the left of which has an associated tear. There is a tear towards the upper right corner (approx. 1.5cm). The sheet is gently undulating due to artist's application of medium. There are a few light surface scratches indicative of the artist's working method and a tiny spot of paper skimming beneath the central yellow figure. There are some fine lines of craquelure and pigment losses to the black ink which is not visually distracting. This work is in overall good condition.
