The canvas is lined and the edges are taped. Inspection under UV light reveals a milky varnish through which UV light cannot fully penetrate but does reveal some lines of retouching including to the upper edge, the man's hair and his right proper shoulder with a few further minor spots and lines elsewhere. There are surface accretions in places. There are fine lines of craquelure to the composition with some associated retouching. There is some historic frame abrasion and gold gilt to the extreme edges. This work is in overall good condition.
