Biergarten in Brannenburg (Beer Garden in Brannenburg)

signed M Liebermann and dated 96 (lower left)

oil on panel

37.9 by 46.1cm, 14⅞ by 18⅛in.

Framed: 68 by 76cm., 26¾ by 29⅞in.

Painted in 1894.

The panel is stable. Inspection under UV light reveals a thick varnish through which the UV light cannot fully penetrate however it does not show any obvious signs of retouching. There are some fine lines of craquelure and paint shrinkage in places. There are some small nicks to the edges of the board and some frame abrasion with some small associated paint losses to the extreme edges. There is some surface dirt and gilt remnants from the frame along the upper and lower edges. This work is in overall very good condition.

The dating in the catalogue raisonné contradicts that on the picture itself and is based on a report by Erich Hancke who visited Liebermann in his studio in the autumn of 1894.
