Fleurs sur fond bleu (fragment)

bears the signature ODILON REDON (lower left)

pastel on paper

30 by 13.5cm., 11¾ by 5¼in.

Framed: 53.4 by 37.1cm., 21 by 14⅝in.

Executed circa 1899.

This work will be included in the forthcoming Redon Digital Catalogue Raisonné, currently being prepared under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc.

Executed on buff wove paper, not laid down and attached to the mount in two places along the upper edge and floating in the overmount. The left and the right edge are unevenly cut corresponding to the work once being part of a larger composition. There are nine artist's pinholes to the upper left corner, one to the lower right corner, one to the lower left corner and two towards the lower part of the left edge. There are some tiny nicks and handling marks to the edges of the sheet, including a small loss to the lower right corner (approx. 0.5cm.) There are some remnants of adhesive relating to historic mounting arrangements to the verso. The colours of the pastel have retained a wonderful vibrancy. This work is in overall very good condition.
