Georges Rouault
1871 - 1958
Danse macabre I
signed G.R. (lower right)
oil over a printed paper base laid down on canvas
39.8 by 29.7cm., 15⅝ by 11¾in.
Framed: 62.5 by 54.1cm., 24⅝ by 21¼in.
Painted circa 1938.
Executed on paper and laid down on canvas, the edges are taped. Inspection under UV light reveals a milky varnish through which UV light cannot fully penetrate, however, there are no obvious signs of retouching. There is tear (approx. 3cm) towards the lower left corner. There is some light surface dirt and several surface accretions. The sheet is slightly undulating in places. This work is in overall good condition.
