Chérubin
stamped MArc ChAgAll (lower left)
pen and brush and ink, wash, and pencil on paper
51.8 by 33.6cm., 20⅜ by 13¼in.
Framed: 80 by 62.3cm., 31½ by 24½in.
Executed in 1958-59.
The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by the Comité Chagall.
Executed on a thick cream Japan paper, not laid down, and hinged to the mount in two places along the upper edge. The upper, right, and lower edges are deckled. The sheet is very slightly undulating in places, inherent to the artist's process. Much of the creasing is inherent to the sheet but there are some additional creases to all four corners. There are some handling marks and slight staining to parts of the very extreme edges. The sheet is slightly time-stained and there are a couple of spots of foxing. This work is in overall very good condition.
