Giorgio de Chirico
Cavallo con palafreniere orientale (Horse with Asian Groom)
Giorgio de Chirico
1888 - 1978
Cavallo con palafreniere orientale (Horse with Asian groom)
signed G. de Chirico (lower right); signed Giorgio de Chirico and inscribed Palafreniere orientale on the reverse
oil on canvas
50.3 by 60.1cm., 19⅞ by 23⅝in.
Framed: 62.8 by 72.9cm., 24¾ by 28¾in.
Painted in 1949.
The canvas is not lined. Inspection under UV light reveals a streaky varnish through which the UV light does not fully penetrate. The bridle and reins of the horse fluoresce suggesting possible historic strengthening, but most likely a result of the artist's experimental working process. There are two light scuff lines with some associated minor paint losses, one to the neck of the horse and another to the left of the figure. There is some light frame abrasion with a few associated paint losses in places. There are some tiny surface accretions and some faint lines of craquelure to the thicker areas of pigment only visible upon close inspection. This work is in overall very good condition.
