Le Champollion à Alger

signed marquet (lower left)

oil on panel

33 by 41.1cm., 13 by 16⅛in.

Framed: 53 by 60.8cm., 20⅞ by 23⅞in.

Painted circa 1943-45.

Oil on cradled panel. The panel is sound. There is a milky varnish through which the UV light cannot fully penetrate but there do not appear to be any signs of retouching. There is some frame abrasion to parts of all four edges, some of which relates to the work having been placed in its frame when the paint was still slightly wet. The are some surface inconsistencies inherent to the board, including a couple of pin-prick holes to the edges. There are some fine lines of craquelure in places, most prominently to the thicker white pigments and some light surface dirt. This work is in overall good condition.
