Feu d’artifice, Le cirque

watercolour, gouache and casein on paper

150 by 94.2cm., 59 by 37⅛in.

Framed: 172 by 120cm., 67¾ by 47¼in.

Executed circa 1927.

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné by Dr. Anne Adriaens-Pannier.

Executed on a thick sheet of cream wove paper. Attached to the mount along the upper edge. The left edge is slightly unevenly cut. There are artist's pinholes to all four corners. There is a repaired tear to the upper left edge supported with Japan paper. There are several and tiny losses to the extreme edges as a result of age and handling. The upper right corner has been reattached and is supported by the Japan paper that runs along the upper edge and there are associated flattened creases and small tears to the sheet towards the upper right edge. The sheet is undulating. There are several vertical creases to the composition with associated minor losses to the medium. There are a number of scuffs to the work in places. There are fine lines of craquelure to the thicker pigments. There are number of losses largely to the thick yellow and gold pigments as a result of the dry quality of the gouache and predominantly to the upper right quadrant and right edge. There are spots of foxing and light staining visible to the verso. There may be some possible fading to one or two of the pigments towards the lower edge but overall the colours retain a wonderful vibrancy. This work is in overall good condition.
