Stephan Welz & Co., Fine Art, Books, Classic Cars, Decorative Arts, Furniture, Silverware, Vintage Jewellery & Watch Auction (Day 1), 25 February 2020, Lot 436

Acquired from the above sale by the present owner

The present lot is a follow up piece to Clarke's well-known oil painting Coming and Going, painted less than three months earlier on 23 June 1960, and several related works, which are the subject of a chapter in Rankin and Hobbs' monograph:

"Peter Clarke commented that this image of itinerant people is not one that he associated with any specific place: it refers to an every present condition in his world...The work reminded him of 'man-made deserts' - the vacant sites of forced removal like District Six after the houses had been demolished and the rubble cleared away... The title of Coming and Going refers overtly to the displacement of thousands of people."

Elizabeth Rankin and Philippa Hobbs, Listening to Distant Thunder: The Art of Peter Clarke (2011), p.79
