Description

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

The Roben Falls at Oyama in Sagami Province (Soshu Roben no taki)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces (Shokoku taki meguri), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1832

Vertical oban: 37.6 x 25.4 cm., 14⅞ x 10 in.

A group of pilgrims purify themselves in the steady cascade of the Roben waterfall before ascending to the Aburi Shrine atop the mountain of Oyama, carrying along wooden swords (kidachi) as offerings to the ceremonial site. References to the publisher of the series, Nishimuraya Yohachi, are playfully hidden within the design: the firms publisher seal appears on a hat lying topmost on a pile to the bottom right. A further hat hanging on a short wooden fence is marked with the character 'Ei', while to the bottom left, the character 'Ju' is visible on the kimono of a man gazing upwards at the waterfall. Together they partially form Nishimura's firm name, Eijudo.
