Description

Katsukawa Shuncho (active circa 1780-1795)

The courtesan Hanaogi of the Ogiya house (Ogiya, Hanaogi)

Edo period, late 18th century

woodblock print, signed Shuncho ga (Pictured by Shuncho), published by Tsuraya Kiemon (Senkakudo), circa 1791

Vertical oban: 37.8 x 24.8 cm., 14⅞ x 9¾ in.

This print is known in two versions: one with the courtesan titled as Hanaogi from the Ogiya house, as above, the other named instead as the courtesan Kisegawa of the Matsubaya house (Matsubaya, Kisegawa) beside a cartouche enclosing a flower. In the latter, the mon [crest] that appears on the kimono also differs and is in the form of an oak leaf (kashiwa mon). The version presented here in this lot appears to be the earlier edition, with finer printing and detail to the robes, and the mon of a stylised triple fan (mitsu hi-ogi) also present in one of the hairpins.
