Baslow on the Derwent
Pencil and gray wash on Whatman paper;
inscribed upper right: Augst [sic] 10. 1801 / Baslow on the Derwent
165 by 254 mm; 6½ by 10 in.
In the summer of 1801 the twenty-five year old John Constable went to stay with his sister’s parents-in-law; the Whalleys of Great Fenton in Staffordshire. In all, he was there for four months, but his only known drawings from this time were made on a three-week tour of Derbyshire that he undertook with the Whalley’s son, Daniel, between 31 July and 20 August.
The present drawing shows the village of Baslow, which is positioned close to the Duke of Devonshire's principal seat of Chatsworth House. The sheet, which is dated 10 August, once formed part of the now disbanded sketchbook that was used on the trip. The book is believed to have originally contained about twenty-eight sheets, with the whereabouts of just over half known today.1
