The most famous representation of the Virgin Immaculata carved by the Neapolitan sculptor Matteo Bottiglieri is the Guglia dell'Immacolata, or the Spire of the Immaculate Virgin, in the Piazza Gesù Nuovo, Naples, which the artist worked on between 1747 and 1750 alongside the sculptor Francesco Pagani. A prototypic example of Neapolitan baroque style, the monument is richly decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the Life of the Virgin, and surmounted by a bronze figure of the Virgin Immaculata.
