Michelangelo's small terracotta and wax models were frequently copied during the artist's lifetime and after. The present bronze was likely derived from the small wax and large clay models in the Casa Buonarrotti, Florence that were executed by the artist in preparation for the four River Gods he intended to carve in marble for the Medici tombs at the Basilica of San Lorenzo, Florence which were never realized.
