Description

Property from the Descendants of David Goldman

Italian, Urbino, 16th century

Crespina with the Sacrifice of Marcus Curtius

inscribed on the reverse Curtio Romani

tin-glazed earthenware

diameter 9 ¾ in.; 24.8cm.

David Goldmann, Vienna

Thence by descent to the present owner.

This scene depictes Marcus Curtius, a soldier in the Roman Republican army who sacrificed himself by leaping into the pits of Hell in order to protect Rome from siege. A maiolica plate such as the present example could be used for both practical and social purposes; when guests were served on such plates, they could prove their level of education by identifying the subjects as they ate their meals.
