During the mid-1860's Carrier-Belleuse executed a series of terracotta busts of celebrated European artists, including Dürer, Raphael, Michelangelo, Rubens and Rembrandt. His bust of the Spanish painter Esteban Murillo (1617-1682), complete with a historically accurate costume, was presented for the first time in 1874 as a pair with a portrait bust of Diego Velázquez (1599-1660). An identical bust is in the Chartreuse Museum in Douai (acc. no. 2733).
