The canvas is lined. The paint surface is stable and in good condition. There is a fine network of craquelure throughout that though visible to the naked eye does not distract. Faint stretcher bar impressions running horizontally and vertically at center. Under UV light, several repairs are visible including a horizontal line extending circa 11 inches from the leftmost tree, bisected by a circa 5 inch vertical line of repair, above which there is a "W" shaped repair circa 6 inches long; small area of retouching in sky at upper center and in isolated areas along the upper and lower edges.

Born in Lyon, Charton (Ernest Marc Jules Charton Thiessen de Treville) came from a distinguished artistic family, studied in Paris, and travelled in Italy and Spain before embarking on an itinerant and expatriate career through Latin America as a painter and photographer. In 1852, he crossed the Isthmus in Panama on his way to California.
