Portrait of Christina Pijll (1601 - 1652), half-length, holding a feather

signed lower left: A. cuyp. fecit.

oil on canvas

canvas: 35 by 30 in.; 88.9 by 76.2 cm.

framed: 46 by 41 in.; 116.8 by 104.1 cm.

The canvas is wax lined and is stable on its stretcher. The portrait image reads well beneath relatively clear varnish. A few spots of old retouching have discolored in the gray background above the sitter's head but are not distracting. No other repairs are visible to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, several areas of retouching and repairs are visible in the background, most of which are already visible to the naked eye, as well as a repair at the top of her head, some retouching in the white collar, and a little retouching on her proper left cheek. The signature is intact and free of retouching. The painting can hang in its current condition but would also benefit from some attention to even out the retouching and a fresh varnish. Offered in a sturdy, decoratively carved giltwood frame with artist nameplate.
