Portrait of a gentleman

signed and dated middle left at the base of the column: C. Wautier . F / 1656

oil on canvas, unframed

canvas: 44½ by 34 in.; 113 by 86.4 cm.

This painting has been relined, recently well restored, and should be hung in it's current condition. A sensitive restoration following years of varnish build up reveleaed a well preserved painting underneath. Original coloration and detailing is strong. Uv light reveals careful restorations in parts of the composition, including a larger patch in the yellow lower center garment and in the extreme lower right corner. Smaller brushstrokes of restoration are sensitively applied in areas around the head, background, and clothing, but these are minor. Overall In good condition and may be hung as is. Offered unframed.
