Jean-Baptiste Pillement enjoyed a peripatetic career: although he was born and died in Lyon, he worked in Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, London, Vienna, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Milan, Rome, Venice, and Basel. The present pair of imaginary landscapes showcase motifs that Pillement used throughout his painted and drawn oeuvre: travelers, fantastical stone arches and imaginary ruins of bridges. In addition to painting landscapes, he made designs for prints, wallpaper, and porcelain, and the impossibly thin arch and bridge here resemble chinoiserie forms on his decorative works. Dated 1792, these scenes were painted while Pillement lived for several years in Pézenas in the Languedoc.
