Description

Property from a Private Collection

Dutch School, second quarter of the 17th century

Winter landscape with elegant figures on a frozen waterway

oil on oak panel, a tondo

diameter: 11¼ in.; 28.6 cm.

framed: 15⅝ by 15½ in.; 39.7 by 39.4 cm.

With Appleby Brothers, London, 1962;
With Kunsthandel P. de Boer, Amsterdam, 1963 (Esaias van de Velde).
G.S. Keyes, Esaias van de Velde 1587 – 1630, Doornspijk 1984, p. 201, cat. no. rej. 46 (as probably by Anthonie Verstraelen).

This small, atmospheric winter scene is enlivened by a group of elegantly attired figures and ice skaters. Although its author has yet to be identified, the panel bears stylistic affinities to Anthonie Verstraelen, a Dutch artist active in the first half of the 17th century who specialized in winter landscapes, almost all of which were composed with figures on frozen waterways that recede into the distance.

A dendrochronology report by Dr. Peter Klein for the present lot is available upon request.
