With Trinity Fine Art, London;
From whom acquired in 1988.
Born in Switzerland to Italian parents, Bossoli trained as a lithographer, painter, and stage designer for the Odessa Opera. He was patronized by Prince Mikhail Vorontsov and was sent to study in Italy in 1839 - 40. After a time in Crimea he moved back to Italy in 1844 and set up a studio in Milan, where he worked until 1853. The present work dates to this period and reflects Bossoli's interest in gouache and tempera gained during his study trip to Italy, where he associated with British view painters.
