Dr. L V. Rosenthal (later Randal), Paris and Berne;

By whom sold ("The Property of L. Rosenthal, Esq."), London, Sotheby's, 29 April 1937, lot 120 (as Westphalian School, circa 1490), bought Hess;

With Schaeffer Galleries, New York;

From whom acquired.

The provincial master of this Adoration was likely active in the Netherlands along the border with Germany between Nijmegen and Roermond. The small figures, high horizon line, and surface detail recall compositions by another anonymous painter active in this area, the so-called Master of the Altar of St. Bartholomew (1450 - 1510).
