With Willem Tableaux Anciens, Brussels;
From whom acquired by family of present owner, 5 May 1962, and by descent.
The inclusion of female martyr saints and female donors indicate that the patron(s) of this portable triptych were most likely religious women, possibly belonging to a lay or tertiary order (beguines). Lay religious women were prolific patrons of the arts in the Low Countries, and intimate altarpieces like this were ideal for the small residences of the women, who often lived in dormitory-style housing in a beguinage.
