Portrait of a woman, half length

inscribed on the reverse:  Mevrou van Oldenbarne / velt(?)

oil on panel

panel: 27⅞ by 23¼ in.; 70.8 by 59.1 cm.

framed: 40 by 36 in.; 101.6 by 91.4 cm.

The panel is planar and supported on the reverse by several metal horizontal battens. The panel is made of three vertical boards, and bevelling is visible on the left and right edges (the battens cover the upper and lower edges). The overall image reads relatively well beneath an old, yellowed and slightly uneven varnish. The sitter's face retains a notable level of crispness compared to her hair and some of her costume elements. A panel join is visible running vertically just to the right of the sitter's head, and this is more noticeable in the lower register where there are some isolated small spots of paint loss. Another more faint vertical join is visible to the left of the sitter. There are some scattered small losses near the edges, partly due to frame abrasion. Some thinness is visible throughout, for example, in the pearls around her neck and in the darker tones of her costume. Inspection under UV reveals a thick, milky varnish that impedes some inspection and beneath which there may be an older campaign of restoration. More recent small spots of retouching are visible in the background, largely to address some of the visible wood grain, and are primarily concentrated in the lower register. There are only a few isolated small scattered spots of retouching in her face, a few in her upper collar, and a few along the panel joins. There are some old spots of scattered retouching in the background that have discolored slightly but do not fluoresce under UV. Offered in a decoratively molded giltwood frame with chips and losses.
