North Italian School, 17th Century

This mustachioed, blue-eyed sitter, shown in three-quarter length, is elegantly attired in a gold-buttoned black doublet with embroidered cuffs and a ruffled collar. Standing beside a table, he rests his right hand on a gauntlet (a piece of armor to protect the hand and wrist) and places his left on the hilt of a rapier, which is suspended from a four-buckle brown leather sword carrier. While the gentleman’s identity remains unknown, his rich dress and luxurious accessories indicate his elevated position in society.

The painting adheres to a typology of portraiture, popularized by artists including Giovanni Battista Moroni and Scipione Pulzone, that emerged out of conventions established by Italian court portraits.
