This poignant scene of motherly devotion derives from a 1609 painting by Orazio Gentileschi today in Bucharest (Muzeul National de Arta al Romaniei, inv. no. 362/8328). The eye contact between mother and son heightens the scene's sense of intimacy, underscored by the naturalism of the woman's facial and bodily features: she is a veristic madonna lactans.

The composition is known in several variants and Gentileschi produced at least one other autograph version in 1609 for Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua.
