Specializing in still lifes of fish, game, and fruit, Johannes Kuveenis the Elder (also known as Cuvenis) was active in Amsterdam and The Hague, where he became a member of the artist’s guild in 1650. This is an exceptionally large work by the artist who typically painted on a more modest scale, suggesting it was commissioned by a particularly distinguished patron. Another large-scale signed work by the artist featuring a heron, birds, and a hunting dog is described in an auction catalogue from Amsterdam, Muller & Cie, 23-26 April 1912, lot 12 (108 by 161 cm.).

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for suggesting an attribution to Johannes Kuveenis the Elder on the basis of digital images and for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
