Javanese stone statues depict people wearing gold rings of different styles as personal ornaments. The present lot recalls the workmanship of Dieng-style rings, characterised by its flat top and U-shaped hoop. Its large size suggests the possibility that it was not meant for fingers, but rather to be worn on the toes or even as pendants. Its association with luck, fertility and prosperity is meant to convey good fortune to its wearer.

Apart from being used as jewellry, flat bezelled rings may also have served as personal seals or forms of identification. Similar Dieng-style rings are illustrated in John Miksic, Old Javanese Gold, New Haven, 2011, pl.33.
