This landscape was painted in August 1925 when Grant visited Adrian Stephen, brother of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf, and his wife Karin. They had recently acquired the somewhat remote King’s Head, a former inn with origins in the seventeenth century, situated on the banks of an estuary at Landermere in Essex. Grant has depicted the King’s Head and the extensive mudflats beyond.
