Located in the northeastern part of Tokyo, the name of the ward of Arakawa derives from the eponymous river, which translates along the lines of ‘rough river waters'. Primarily an agricultural area throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), the ward transitioned to an industrial complex with factories erected on the waterfront. Here, raftsmen silhouetted in the early autumn rain and ensuing darkness are seen ferrying their load across the wide river. Where it narrows, a bridge is visible connecting the two banks.
