Snell was born in Natal, South African. Her father was a British officer and in 1893 she – together with her family – moved to England. Having trained under Augustus John, by the 1920s was a popular society portrait painter, while also contributing work to The Sketch and the Bystander magazines. She spent two period living in New York, where, again she was popular with high society. During second world war she was in England and worked as an official war artist.
