An early George III carved mahogany commode of impressive scale, probably second half 18th century
of serpentine form, consisting of four drawers and the edges embellished with fluid rococo carvings including bellflowers, beading and C-scrolls, centred with a carved apron, raised on four similarly carved legs terminating in a volute, inscribed in pencil to the underside, John Codley Joiner Wallington
128.5cm. high, 155cm. wide, 64.5cm. deep; 4ft. 2⅝in., 5ft. 1in., 2ft. 1⅜in.
By descent at Wallington to Sir Walter Calverley Trevelyan, 5th Bt. (d. 1879) and transferred to Nettlecombe Court, Somerset upon his death;
By descent at Nettlecombe Court to Mrs J.A. Wolseley until sold, Christie's London, 11 October 1962, lot 35 (£357 to Waddington);

This chest of drawers follows a form strongly associated with Chippendale, who included several similar designs for ‘Commode Tables’ in both editions of the Gentleman & Cabinet Maker’s Director. There is a particular similarity to the commode pictured in the Third Edition, plate LXVII.
