Executed in 1983, the present work reflects a tumultuous period of instability in Farrell’s life. The artist had been struggling privately with his marriage and alcoholism, and also publicly with his finances for the best part of a decade. With an auto-biographical bent to much of his work, many of these anxieties break through in the composition. Executed with a free and vigorous hand, it reflects as much formally as it does thematically the sense of dissaray the artist experienced. The hat stand to the right is a recurring motif in his works of the period as is the Joyceian figure to the left (see also lot 26). Farrell identified with Joyce and his figure forms a notable presence in these works.
