Drawn on a letter head from ‘Chatham, Bar and Grill-Room, 17 Rue Daunou, Paris’, the present work is characteristic of the witty, gossipy and self-depreciating letters Orpen would write to friends. The artist often spent time in Paris, the present example dating to March 1922. Orpen appears to be lamenting his self-restraint of sticking to ginger ale only.

Duncan Tate was an architect and close friend of Orpen’s and was one of the group with whom he dined regularly at a number of clubs, including the Savile, Buck’s, the Chelsea Arts Club and the Arts Club. Tate was also employed by Orpen to refashion his house and studio at 9 South Bolton Gardens.

L'artiste passait souvent du temps à Paris, le présent exemple datant de mars 1922. Orpen semble se lamenter sur la retenue dont il faisait preuve en ne buvant que du soda au gingembre.
