Patek Philippe introduced their first serially produced perpetual calendar wristwatch in 1941 with the Reference 1526. Since then, the atelier has tantalized collectors with exciting variances in both caliber and dial configuration. Examples include the 2497 and the coveted 3450 with leap year indication introduced in 1981. The perpetual calendar was transformed with the 1986 launch of the Reference 3940, one of the finest complicated wristwatches produced with a legible perpetual calendar configuration to the dial, and a micro-rotor based automatic movement, the caliber 240. Indeed, the model was so popular that it remained in production for over 20 years before it was finally retired in favor of the Reference 5140.

The Reference 5140 was first launched in 2006 powered by the same caliber 240, offering collectors a larger case size in 37.2 mm. The updated case was first introduced in white gold, and then later in yellow, pink gold, and platinum. The model offers daring color combinations that are unique to their case materials. For example, this striking blue dial is only offered with a platinum case.

The present lot is a superb example of the apex atelier and its mastery of the perpetual calendar complication. To the best of our research no more than six platinum pieces have been identified back into the market today. We are pleased to present this lot which is fresh to the market and comes complete with a full suite of accessories from the original owner.
