Produced from 1976 to 1998, reference 3700 was nicknamed the Nautilus “Jumbo” for its impressive size for the time, and is the genesis for what becomes the most sought after line of watches from Patek Philippe.
Designed by Gérald Genta, the Nautilus was inspired by the portholes on an ocean liner and was marketed to be the most expensive stainless steel watch on launch. This icon of 20th century design has proved to be the perfect versatile vessel for Patek to experiment with complications, including power reserves in the Ref 3710 and 5712, annual calendar in the Ref 5726, chronograph in the Ref 5980 and perpetual calendar in the Ref 5740.
The flat automatic movement in the original 3700 is the caliber 28-255C with date function but no sweep seconds. The reference 3700 is considered one of the most important and desirable sports watches to date, proving itself to be a truly timeless classic.
