Audemars Piguet first revealed its 'Concept' timepiece in 2002 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its original stainless steel Royal Oak. The Royal Oak CCW1 was launched in 2008 as the first timepiece to feature a forged carbon case and movement. The main plate of the watch's movement is made of carbon, while the central bridge is produced from eloxed aluminum.
The 384-part caliber 2895 is a technological powerhouse, incorporating a tourbillon, chronograph and twin-barrel system that enables an approximate 237-hour power reserve (10 days). The linear chronograph minute counter breaks with the traditional chronograph register, instead presenting an open-worked bridge with double vertical scale. The unusual function selector allows the crown to wind or set the movement, or simply rest in a neutral position.
The styling of the watch alludes to its roots in the Royal Oak line of watches, particularly with the octagonal bezel and faceted hooded lugs. This model, however, is made of forged carbon, ceramic and blackened titanium. Even with the massive case, the watch is incredibly light, weighing a mere 90 grams. It is no surprise that the Concept watch was well received by collectors as it does a wonderful job of technically expanding the Royal Oak line, while remaining true to the general aesthetic principles of the series.
