In the early 1970’s in the midst of the “quartz crisis” Audemars Piguet commissioned a design from Gérald Genta, which would -in time, become one of the most iconic watch designs of the 20th century. Featuring a stainless steel, octagonal case and integrated bracelet; it looked completely unlike anything else on the market in 1972 and has continued to influence watch design to the present day.

Reference 14790 which was a mid-size Royal Oak in 36mm, was produced from the late 1980’s through until 2008. These models featured 3 periods, categorised through dial variations and updated movements.

The present watch is an early 1990’s D-series, which falls into a Mk1 period, however given its unusual dial it can’t be categorised by its dial variations. The present dial is an unusually non-tapisserie pattern dial with a smooth white lacquered finish, applied roman numerals and baton indexes. Seen only on a handful of other models in black lacquer of a different reference and smaller case size. Additionally, the watch is presented in a full platinum case and bracelet. Inscribed on the reverse, is a very collectible No 0001. This is the first of its kind we are aware of to come to market and deserves a place in any serious AP connoisseur’s collection.
