Description
A German Parcel-Gilt Silver Beaker, Samuel Birckenholtz, Frankfurt, Circa 1710
of tapered cylindrical form, the spreading foot chased with a band of strapwork and flowerheads, the body engraved at a later date with strapwork enclosing three oval scenes- Elijah being fed by the Raven, Daniel in the Lions’ Den and the Spies of Canaan, maker’s mark and city mark on base

The engraving appears to be after beakers by this maker, of which three are in the Frankfurt Historical Museum engraved with religious scenes within strapwork inv. Nos. 24 432 20 853 and 19:624 , Scheffler, Goldschmiede Hessens, no 346, p. 248. A similar Beaker by Peter Hunderstund, Frankfurt, circa 1720 was in the Thurn und Taxis Collection, Sotheby’s, Geneva, November 17, 1992, lot 12, while two others by this maker are the Frankfurt Historical Museum inv-Nr 20 846 inv 20 894, also engraved with scenes in strapwork.
