A French Silver Torah Shield, Maker’s Mark R over an Arrow, Retailed by Schwartz, Probably Strasbourg, Circa 1840-50


of cartouche shape embossed and chased with lion-topped, flower- wrapped baroque columns flanking  an aperture and slot for portion plaques, on diaper and matted ground, engraved with contemporary script initials J K and J D and with later inscription, hung with two bells ( a third missing), marked near top and base on front, has chain


Height of shield 11 in.

The later inscription reads, “Kauffmann Blum a L’Oratoire Israelite du Gross Caillou 6 7bre 1888”.


The Oratoire du Gros Caillou was at 27 Ave de la Motte Piquet, Paris. Kauffman Blum, listed as a maker of military equipment , was born in Schaffhouse-pres-Seltz, Bas-Rhin, Grand-Est, and died in Paris, Ile de France, 1899.
