Description
A French Silver-Gilt Beaker from a Hevra Kadisha Society , Gottfried Imlin, (Master 1726), Strasbourg, 1736-50, with Prague Control Marks for Circa 1805 and 1810-24
rounded base with convex center, molded rim, engraved with Hebrew inscription, marked on base with maker’s mark and city mark, the rim with two Prague control marks for circa 1810

The inscription reads: “Bought using the charity money of the Hevrah Kaddisha A[nshei] H[ayyim] by its sextons, Löw Bresnitz, Meir [Marcus] Winternitz, and Meir [Markus] Doktor.” The Hevrah Kaddisha Anshei Hayyim, founded in 1786 in Prague, was a charitable society whose members would meet every Thursday mid-morning for prayers and would also distribute charity to the poor on the holiday of Purim. All three men were active in the Prague Jewish community in the early to mid-nineteenth century.
