The present lots are from a series of copper plates presented by Ettore Sottsass in 1959 for Galleria Il Sisante in Milan. The plates served as a prototype for a series of 19 hand-turned red earthenware and twenty-seven enamels intended for mass production. The series was ultimately altered to be created from mold-formed earthenware plates. The enameled copper plates offered in this sale highlight Sottsass’s early predilection for geometric, symbolic design which has clear connection to his later work as a radical designer and member of the influential Memphis design group.
