"Tropique" Dining Table

circa 1951

model no. 503

lacquered steel, aluminum

28⅜ x 74¾ x 35⅜ in. (72.1 x 189.9 x 89.8 cm)

Overall in very good condition. The aluminum top presents with minor surface scratches, abrasions and minute indentations throughout consistent with age and use. One edge of the tabletop with a slightly more pronounced area of abrasion measuring approximately 1 ¾ in. wide. The tabletop with scattered very minor stains throughout, not visually distracting. The aluminum tabletop with areas of discoloration to the gray finish scattered around the tabletop and concentrated to the outer edges. The sides of the tabletop with 16 metal screws which are stable and exhibit signs of age and oxidation throughout. The lacquered steel base throughout presents with scratches, minor edge abrasions and scuffing consistent with use. The base of the table presents with evidence of several layers of lacquer application, from dark burgundy to a lighter maroon, as well as evidence of green primer application partially visible throughout. The result is a highly dynamic lacquered surface which enhances the modernist quality of the work. The metal undersurface presents with some light oxidation throughout, consistent with age and the natural evolution of the medium.
