The Important Abell Family Classical Fancy Yellow, Green and Gold Paint-Decorated Klismos Side Chair
Attributed to John Finlay (1777-1851) and/or Hugh Finlay (1781-1831)
Baltimore, Maryland
Circa 1810-1815
The paint-decorated crest with fantastical wolf creatures flanking the base of an ancient Ionic column
Height 33 3/4 in. by Width 17 7/8 in. by Depth 22 3/8 in.; Seat Height 16 5/8 in.
These side chairs have a history of descent in the Griffiss-Fenwick family of Baltimore.
They were possibly owned by Arunah Shepherdson Abell (1806-1888) and Mary Fox Abell (1818-1859) of Baltimore;
To their daughter Dorothy Margaret “Daisy” Abell Griffiss (1859-1929) and John Irving Griffiss (1856-1894);
To their daughter, Margaret Mary Griffiss Fenwick (1890-1974) and Guy Bernard Fenwick (1881-1954);
To their son, Charles Cuthbert Fenwick (1924-2020) and Elizabeth White Fenwick.
