Richard Edgcumbe, The art of the gold chaser in 18th century London, Oxford, 2001, p. 38, no 4.

The London-born chaser of the present box, Thomas Burges, was apprenticed to Laurence Hamond in 1731 and recorded as a chaser until the seventeen-sixties, when he is recorded as a drawing master. This crossover is not surprising, because chasers naturally had to be good draughtsmen. So far, a few chased gold boxes by Burges are known, most of which seem to have been made by Francis Harrache; see for example a chased example, signed 'Burges', sold Sotheby's Geneva, 13 November 1995, lot 425.
